Union Road in New Mills was cordoned off on Saturday morning

A road has been closed in a Derbyshire town after several sinkholes appeared over a bridge following a burst water main.

Derbyshire Police said the Union Road Bridge in New Mills was shut on Saturday morning.

The force said the road was unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians to use and would remain closed until further notice.

A footpath beneath the bridge, which crosses the River Goyt, was also closed.

Pictures shared on social media showed water streaming down Union Road following the closure, and United Utilities confirmed there was a leak.

County councillor Anne Clarke, who represents New Mills, posted on Facebook: "The water has now been switched off which should restore water to the majority of households affected this morning.

"I have been told around 10 properties will still be without water and plans are in place to support.

"There has been severe damage to the road and so there is no access for vehicles, or pedestrians over the bridge into the town centre."
