Further snowfall brings fresh disruption to county

Three roads have now reopened in Derbyshire after snowfall in the county, with two schools confirmed to have shut for the day.

Derbyshire County Council confirmed the A54 Cat and Fiddle, A53 Axe Edge between Buxton and Leek, and the A6024 Holme Moss from Crowden to Holmfirth are now open.

The authority said gritting work on primary routes began at 04:00 GMT on Friday and confirmed all other main routes "remain passable with care".

Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth and Unstone Junior School in Unstone are closed.

"The area from Buxton to Newhaven has been worst hit by snow conditions, and our gritters have been out ploughing overnight to keep main routes open," the council added in a social media post.

The post also advised drivers to take care if travelling on the roads.

According to travel monitoring website Inrix, the A515 in Newhaven is "impassable due to snow" between the A5012 and the B5056.

Meanwhile, the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called out to "multiple incidents" on Thursday due to wintry conditions.

Team members assisted Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and the ambulance service following a "multiple-vehicle incident" in The Street.

The road was blocked due to the crash, close to The Goyt Valley.

A spokesperson for the team said: "Thankfully, all involved walked away."

The council said teams will be heading out on Friday afternoon to grit more than 1,500 miles of A and B roads.

A spokesperson said they are expecting a further eight centimetres of snow on higher ground overnight and urged people to take care when travelling.
