Mountain Road closed for storm clear up and survey

A major route linking the Isle of Man's capital with the north has been closed to traffic for the clear up of storm debris and planned surveying works.

The southern section of the A18 Mountain Road was already due to shut between the Brandywell Road and Creg ny Baa Back Road junctions until 16:30 GMT.

But the Department of Infrastructure also closed the northern from leg from Ramsey to allow for the clearing of drainage channels following Storm Darragh.

Monday's planned surveying works from the Brandywell Road junction marked second of three closures in December to prepare for a major refurbishment next year.

A month-long closure for the road to be resurfaced and reprofiled as part of a road safety improvement programme is due to begin in April.

The southern section of the A18 is also due to close between 09:30 and 16:30 on Tuesday, with Wednesday earmarked as a contingency day.

Last week, Monday's planned closure was postponed due to high winds, while the planned surveying works went ahead on Tuesday.

While the Mountain Road remained open to all by high-sided vehicle during the daytime on Saturday, it was closed overnight into Sunday for safety reasons as severe gales hit the island.
