It's been argued that art from the Orientalism period, mostly from the 19th Century and created for a European audience, subtly asserted Western superiority and pandered to the male gaze.
Now, Ardan Ozmenoglu, an Istanbul based artist who uses elements of pattern and repetition, traditionally found in Islamic art, along with a distinctly pop art sensibility, is reframing the often problematic imagery of Orientalism.
