Cinema rolls out 'black carpet' for 28 Years Later

Stars of 28 Years Later have taken to the "black carpet" in the region where much of it was made.

It is the third instalment in the 28 franchise, started by Danny Boyle in 2002, and more than 80% of the movie has been filmed on location and sets around north-east England.

Northumberland's Holy Island, Kielder and Hexham provide a backdrop, along with Waskerley in County Durham. Sets were also built into the former Nightingale Hospital site in Washington.

Director Danny Boyle joined the film's star Alfie Williams, from Gateshead, and actor Chi Lewis-Parry on a special black carpet at the North East Gala Screening at Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema on Thursday.

It is the first of a trilogy of films, with the sequel 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, also set in the North East, due to be released next year.

Locally 70 jobs were created during the production and filming, with dozens of opportunities created for actors who were cast to play extras and "infected".
