Cardiff train delays, cancellations after wire theft bid

Train services into Cardiff have been disrupted after a train was struck by damaged overhead wires.

Police are investigating the attempted theft of electric cables that were cut and then fell on an empty passenger train just before 06:00 GMT on Friday near Llandaff.

Train services between Cardiff Queen Street and Radyr reopened at 15:00 GMT.

Transport for Wales said repairs were under way but disruption was expected to continue until 17:00 GMT.

Rail tickets for passengers travelling from or through those stations are being accepted by Cardiff Bus and a bus replacement service is operating between Radyr and Pontypridd.

British Transport Police said enquiries were continuing and Transport for Wales apologised for the delays and urged travellers to check for updates before they travel.

"Earlier this morning, a train struck overhead wires that had come down near Llandaff station," it said.

"Engineers and the British Transport Police are in attendance to investigate and repair the damage."

Josy Reece, 22, travelling from Llandaff to the city centre, said: "As far as I knew the trains were running as normal.

"There was no notice that they were delayed or not running today at the station.

"I've been waiting here at the station for the last 15 minutes.

"The Trainline (information service) is still showing services are delayed but will still be running, which is confusing."
