Vaughan Gething: 'Compelling' case for cancer target change

The current cancer waiting times targets in Wales could end up being scrapped under plans to be announced later by the Welsh health secretary.

Vaughan Gething said clinicians believe there is a compelling argument for a single route for all cancer patients.

Patients with cancer currently follow one of two routes to treatment depending on how a cancer is found - each with a separate waiting time target.

The single route idea has been trialled in the Cwm Taf health board area and is set to be rolled out across NHS Wales - but only alongside the existing targets for the time being.

Mr Gething said he needs to understand if it really makes a difference.
