A bin lorry's load of recycling had to be tipped into a road in Kent after it caught fire, to prevent a large scale blaze, Swale Borough Council has said.

Residents were warned of delays to collections after the incident in Sea View Gardens, Warden.

The council posted on Facebook: "Crews were quick to act but unfortunately the load had to be tipped into the street."

It said teams had been sent to clear the road of the waste, which cannot now be recycled because of contamination.

The council said some items were found, such as nappies, black sacks, batteries, electrical appliances, food and clinical waste, that should not have been in blue recycling bins.

The authority urged residents to check its website for guidance.
