Residents have said they fear there will be a serious accident due to drivers ignoring restrictions and parking close to a main road junction.

People living near Hillside Gardens and Pelaw Avenue in Stanley, County Durham said existing "Keep Clear" markings were "routinely ignored" with parked cars creating a dangerous obstruction.

They have created a petition urging Durham County Council to replace the markings with double yellow lines.

Durham County Council is to respond to the petition later this year.

The petition claimed drivers "frequently parked" near the junction at Hillside Gardens, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

"This obstruction makes it extremely difficult to safely assess oncoming traffic, particularly those exceeding the speed limit," it read.

"The risk of accidents, including collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles, is greatly increased," the petition added.

Residents said visitors, taxi drivers, and delivery drivers were also concerned about the safety issues.

New traffic calming measures have also been suggested to improve road safety, including reduced speed limits and speed bumps.
