Ex-firefighter was 'true pillar' of community
A fire service has paid tribute to a former watch manager, describing him as a "true pillar" of the community.
John Davies worked as an on-call firefighter with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in Oswestry for 33 years, retiring in 2017.
Oswestry Fire Station posted the emotional tribute on Facebook announcing Mr Davies' death, which has attracted dozens of comments.
"He was the kind of man who always had your back, whether it was at a challenging incident or during a tough moment in life," the tribute reads.
"His leadership as watch manager was second to none—fair, understanding and supportive, he brought out the best in everyone around him.
"John gave his all to the fire service, answering the call at all hours, in all conditions, to help those in need."
An engineer by trade, Mr Davies worked at JCB in Wrexham, Stadco in Shrewsbury, and for Jones of Oswestry over the years, all while being an on-call firefighter.
"He didn't just fight fires - he saved lives, protected homes and comforted families in their darkest hours," the tribute said.
"John's fingerprints are on every part of Oswestry Fire Station and his influence will be felt for generations."
Mr Davies also organised the town's annual bonfire and fireworks night and led weekly drill nights, where firefighters practice their skills ready for emergencies.
One comment on social media said: "I learned a great deal from John, he was the first LF [leading firefighter] I served under in the fire service. He gave me an outstanding model to work from."
Another said: "Devastated to hear this news today. John was a great mentor to me and many others that served with him."
The tribute offered condolences to Mr Davies' family, and thanked them for "sharing him" with the service.
"Rest in peace John, you've done your duty and you've done it with honour. Thank you for everything - you will always be in our hearts."
