Super-ATMs to allow deposits in multiple banks
A "super-ATM" is being trialled which allows people to withdraw and deposit money with multiple banks.
The first machine is already in use in Atherstone, Warwickshire, with further machines to be tested elsewhere.
Cash Access UK said the initiative was vital for those struggling to access basic banking services.
The organisation's chief executive, Gareth Oakley, said: "It's just as important that businesses who accept cash can bank it too."
The machines currently enable free cash deposits for Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, Lloyds, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank customers.
Cash Access UK, a not-for-profit organisation funded by major banks, said it expected other providers to be added soon.
The machines are connected to the Link ATM network and have been set up in partnership with providers NCR Atleos and NoteMachine.
The deposit service, which is among solutions being trialled by Cash Access UK, were described as "an important innovation" by the Federation of Small Businesses.
National chairman Martin McTague said the decline of the bank branch network had made it difficult for small business owners to deposit takings safely without shutting early "or travelling for miles".
"The ability to deposit in a super-ATM that works for multiple banks is an important innovation and could make a real difference alongside the accelerated rollout of banking hubs and maintenance of Post Office counters," he added.
