A showman who was a member of a well-known family of funfair operators was killed while crossing a dual carriageway, an inquest into his death has heard.

Terence Tuby, 75, whose family had been running fairs across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for more than 150 years, died earlier this year, the inquest at Doncaster Coroner's Court was told.

Mr Tuby was struck by two vehicles at about 18:00 GMT on 1 February as he attempted to cross Greens Way in Mexborough without first activating the pedestrian lights, the inquest heard on Monday.

Assistant coroner Abigail Combes was told neither driver could have avoided the collision and she concluded that Mr Tuby died as a result of a road traffic collision.

'Great loss'

Mr Tuby's father was the founder of Arthur Tuby and Sons Funfairs, while his cousin ran Roger Tuby and Son Funfairs, the inquest was told.

Mr Tuby was born in Mexborough alongside his twin brother Trevor, and he had one son and three grandchildren, his family said.

In a statement to the court, Mr Tuby's son, James, said his father's death had been "a great loss", adding: "I have lovely memories of dad, which I will cherish forever."

His father was "a showman all his life" who "loved what he did and knew of nothing else", he added.

The court heard that two other pedestrians had been killed at the same spot in the last four years, while another two had been seriously injured in collisions there during the same period.

Ms Combes said while it appeared that appropriate safety measures at the crossing were in place for pedestrians, she would request a report from Doncaster Council to determine whether to issue a report in an effort to prevent future deaths at the site.
