Three held after police use stinger to stop car

Two men and a teenage boy were arrested by police who used a stinger to stop a stolen car in South Yorkshire.

The three people were in a Kia Picanto which failed to stop for police in Wath, Rotherham, on Wednesday morning.

Officers used a stinger to puncture the car's tyres in Mexborough, forcing it to stop and two men, aged 21 and 19, and a 16-year-old boy were arrested.

They were questioned about offences including suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle and were all released on bail, South Yorkshire Police said.

The three had tried to run away but were arrested by officers and stolen property was found in the car, the force added.

The 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and going equipped to steal.

The 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle, and the 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of illegal drugs.

Sgt Andy Smith, of Doncaster South Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "The occupants of the stolen vehicle showed a complete disregard for public safety as they ignored our requests to stop and instead led officers on a pursuit in which they drove at excessive speeds."
