A lithium battery was the "likely" cause of a house fire.

Firefighters were called at around 21:40 BST on Thursday to a blaze at the property on Woburn Way, Eastbourne.

One woman was assisted by the ambulance service, according to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS).

The house was "seriously affected" and in a statement the fire service said: "Officers at the scene have informed that the likely cause of the fire was due to a lithium battery from a segway charger."

ESFRS said six appliances attended the scene, supported by an aerial ladder.

Crews using breathing apparatus tackled the blaze on the building's first floor and loft space.

Police and ambulance services were also on the scene.

Locals were urged to keep windows closed and avoid the area.

Shortly after midnight ESFRS said "we will remain in attendance for some time".
