A plaque, honouring a firefighter killed in a crash while responding to an incident 44 years ago, has been unveiled in Hull.

Ian Cameron, a sub officer, died while responding to an incident on 2 May 1980.

A ceremony was held at Clough Road Fire Station to unveil a permanent memorial to Mr Cameron.

The tribute is part of the Red Plaque project, run by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and funded by the Firefighters 100 Lottery.

Mr Cameron died after his crew, based at what was then the North Hull fire station, was involved in a crash on Beverley Road after it was called to an incident.

Despite the efforts of the crew, Mr Cameron, who was in charge of the engine, died at the scene.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by family, friends and former colleagues of Mr Cameron and included speeches from FBU officials and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

Lloyd Akers, the FBU brigade organiser for Humberside, said: "It will provide a place for those who knew and loved him to gather, and for future generations of firefighters to reflect on the bravery of those who have gone before us.

"All firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty are an important part of our history, and we will always remember."
