Motorists warned of delays for large convoy on A27

Motorists have been warned of possible delays with diversions in place on a stretch of the A27 while two large pieces of electrical equipment are transported by a slow-moving convoy.

The supergrid transformers will be moved at 07:00 GMT on Sunday from Shoreham Port in West Sussex to a substation near Uckfield, East Sussex.

The 24-mile journey, which includes travelling on the A27, A26 and A22, is expected to take between six and eight hours with a top speed of 12mph (19.3kph).

East Sussex Highways has urged those using the roads to allow extra time for their journeys.

An A27 diversion will be in place eastbound from the Devil’s Dyke roundabout and westbound from Lewes Road.

Lane one of the A27's eastbound road from Devil’s Dyke Road to the A23 roundabout will remain open to re-route traffic onto the diversion.

Vehicles in both directions will be diverted via the A293, Old Shoreham Road and A270 to re-join the A27.

The Ditchling Road, Carden Avenue and Coldean Lane junctions onto the A27 will also be shut.

Southbound traffic on the A23 London Road will only be able access the A27 westbound off the A23 Patcham roundabout, not eastbound.
