Grimsby Central Library contains asbestos, which may have been disturbed as a result of a water leak

Grimsby Central Library will remain closed for "some time" to allow asbestos to be removed.

The building closed at short notice in March after a water leak "created a risk of asbestos disturbance".

North East Lincolnshire Council said books and local history archives would be taken out of the 1960s building to allow for assessments and asbestos to be removed.

It is not known when the library will reopen, with the council exploring options for a temporary facility.

Councillor Hayden Dawkins, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and the visitor economy, said: "Like almost all buildings of this age, asbestos is an issue and until this is dealt with properly we cannot move forward with any plans for this building

"The recent water leak and subsequent damage has accelerated essential asbestos removal works that would have always been needed."

Dawkins added the council would seek to complete the work as quickly as possible. He apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Library users affected by the closure are invited to use facilities in Immingham, Waltham and Cleethorpes.
