Ban for dog owner caught on camera hitting pet

A man has been banned from keeping animals for 15 years and given a suspended jail sentence after he was caught on camera beating his dog.

Daniel Neil Robertson, from Birmingham, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

The RSPCA took Robertson to court over two videos of the 44-year-old hitting his Staffordshire bull terrier Reggie.

“There is never an excuse for treating an animal in this way,” RSPCA inspector Ben Jones said in a statement issued by the charity.

The RSPCA said one of the video clips showed Robertson throwing Reggie on to the floor, while another showed him beating the dog as it tried to escape.

Robertson was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates Court earlier this month, over two incidents that took place in March and April.

As well as the 15-year ban, he was given an eight-month jail sentence that was suspended for 12 months.

The RSPCA said Reggie had been signed over into its care.
