Surge in children needing Christmas meal predicted

A charity that provides a Christmas meal for homeless and disadvantaged people says it expects a surge in children attending this year's serving, as families struggle with rising prices.

Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS) is due to host the event at Birmingham’s New Street Station on Christmas Eve for the seventh year in a row.

The charity said there was a “dire need” for its free festive meal this year, with a growing number of households “struggling to put food on their tables”.

It said rising energy costs and falling living standards were putting a particular strain on families.

MLSS added it was committed to creating a joyful get-together that would include a DJ, carol singers, and a visit from Father Christmas.

In previous years more than 250 people have attended the events, which MLSS organises in association with Network Rail.

During the Covid pandemic, the event was held outdoors and takeaway meals were provided.

The charity has set up an online fundraising page where people can donate to the cause.
