Officers have warned the public not to approach a man wanted in connection with a stabbing.

Nottinghamshire Police issued an appeal to trace Simon McHugh after a man in his 30s was seriously injured in the stabbing near the Co-op supermarket in Westdale Lane, East, Gedling at about 22.30 BST on Tuesday.

McHugh, 45, who is about 6ft (1.82m) and was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black shorts, was described as "extremely dangerous" by the force.

Officers have urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact them immediately.

A large police cordon was set up in the area after the incident and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Ch Insp Jo Elbourn said: "We would like to reassure the public that a thorough investigation is taking place to determine what has happened.

"There will be a cordon in place for some time while these investigations take place.

"We are calling for anyone with information or who saw what happened and has not yet come forward to please get in touch.

"We know a number of people were in the area at the time of the incident.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of the man who has been attacked during this extremely difficult time."
