The second planning application for a major town centre regeneration project in Shropshire has been submitted.

The Smithfield Riverside project is a scheme that aims to revamp the area between the River Severn, the Darwin Shopping Centre and Roushill in Shrewsbury.

The outline application seeks to secure planning permission to develop three plots between Smithfield Road, Raven Meadows, and a planned new park on Roushill.

Shropshire Council said its proposals included a mix of residential, office and hotel uses.

The maximum building height for the plots had been reduced by one storey compared to previous versions of the plans, to ensure the development respected the character of Shrewsbury's skyline, the authority added.

Public consultation shaped the application, with more than 3,000 people getting involved.

"With the delivery of the exciting new public park along Roushill now in full flow, it’s great to see the next part of the long-term vision coming forwards," said Ian Nellins, deputy leader of Shropshire Council.

“The council and our project team would like to thank everyone who viewed the outline plans for phase two and shared their feedback with us.

"This is a project for the whole of Shropshire and the comments we received have tangibly influenced the latest planning application."

The first stage of the project, a new public park alongside Roushill, was approved earlier this year.

Demolition of the former Riverside shopping centre began in August to make way for the park.
