Plans discussed for town's Armistice Day plaque

Plans for a brass plaque to mark Armistice Day in a market town have been discussed by council bosses.

Councillor David Vasmer raised the suggestion at Shropshire Council's cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

He said the president of the Royal British Legion had pitched the idea of having a plaque on the pavement in Shrewsbury's Market Square, where the Armistice commemoration is held annually.

Councillor Dan Morris, portfolio holder for highways, said the authority had no objection to a plaque, provided that funds were raised and the plaque was produced by the town council and British Legion.

He confirmed it would not require planning permission if it was not attached to a building.

"The historic environment team can advise on the design and siting of the plaque to ensure it is appropriate for this sensitive location in the conservation area," he added.

Vasmer said the plaque would serve as a reminder of Armistice Day being commemorated every year and would act as a marker for the location of the event.
