Sea ambulance trip for fundraising pupils

Pupils from Herm School were rewarded with a trip on Guernsey's maritime ambulance on Wednesday to thank them for fundraising more than £180 for the service.

The four children raised the money by selling cookies and Welsh cakes in aid of the Flying Christine III.

The visit had even inspired one of the children to become a paramedic when she was older.

Felicity, 10, said that she wanted "to be able to help people if they're injured or in need" and enjoyed the feeling of "thinking I've done something right".

The boat took the children around the island and neighbouring Jethou and they were treated to a tour of the clinical area and wheelhouse.

Some of them even got a chance to get behind the wheel as well.

"Now I've experienced being on the boat and driving the boat I really liked it," Felicity said.

Lee Harvey, the school's only teacher, said the children had chosen to raise money for the ambulance after he had a conversation with them about "what makes a good citizen".

He said he hoped the children's efforts would encourage other people to support the Flying Christine, which provides the island's main emergency route to the hospital in Guernsey.
