Cimandis Foodservice is closing its depot site in Jersey

A food wholesaler has confirmed it will close one of its Channel Island depots at the end of July.

Cimandis Foodservice said "increasingly challenging trading conditions" had led to the decision to shut its site on the Rue des Pres Trading Estate in St Saviour, Jersey.

The company, which also has sites in Guernsey and Alderney, said it had not taken the decision lightly but the current economic environment had "rendered ongoing operations in Jersey unsustainable".

Bosses at the firm - part of the Caterfood Buying Group - said it would continue its service to regular Jersey-based customers during the weeks before the closure.

The closure in Jersey will not affect the company's other operations including its service to Herm and Sark, a spokesperson said.

Nigel Holliday, director of Cimandis, said significant increases in rent and shipping costs had contributed to the decision.

"Despite our diligent efforts, the economic environment has exerted substantial pressure on our capacity to sustain a viable business model," Mr Holliday said.

He added the firm was working with other food service businesses to help its staff find new jobs.
