Existing seasonal campers on Herm will be exempt from rules about the size of storage sheds unless they replace them, after the States agreed to proposals from the island's management team.

The rules, designed to "protect the natural charm" of Herm, affect the use of fences and astroturf, as well as the size and colour of sheds on the island's Seagull Campsite.

Herm's management team met with seasonal pitch holders last month to agree the proposals, following criticisms from officials in Guernsey about the "over-development" of the island's campsite.

John Singer, Herm's leaseholder, said he was "very happy to see common sense prevail".

He added the agreement would preserve the "natural beauty, charm & tranquillity of Herm which we all love and enjoy so very much".

Mr Singer said there was one exception to the exemption, but that pitch holder would have a three year grace period to make alterations.
