Google’s grand design challenge

Can Google design be consistent?

As the tech giant is overhauling the look of its products, BBC Click’s Sumi Das asks whether it is too big a company to have a unified design strategy.

In recent months the company has introduced products that are the result of a major makeover that began a couple of years ago. Historically, products like Google search were simple-at-heart and easy to use, but over time people realised they were missing an important part of great design: beauty.

When Larry Page became CEO in 2011, he tasked designers with overhauling Google’s look – from Gmail to maps. But unlike Apple, the Mountain View based firm has no single gatekeeper overseeing design, so it had to take a different tack.

BBC Click’s Sumi Das reports on their efforts so far, and asks whether Google is too big a company to have a single design strategy.
