Tobacco: The dangerous plant's sacred origins
The tobacco plant’s origins can now be traced back to Bolivia, in South America. The people native to this land cultivated the plant and used it as part of their cultural traditions.
Between 2500 and 3000 BC, the cultivation of tobacco spread through Central America. The plant was regarded as sacred amongst local tribes who used the substance in religious ceremonies for spiritual and medicinal purposes.
