Moment drink-driver loses control on country road

Footage showing the moment a drink-driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a police car on a country road in Nottinghamshire has been released.

Officers on patrol saw the car veer off into a grass verge before it crashed into their vehicle on Mattersey Road in Mattersey, on 10 June.

Neil Shackleton was found to be twice the legal alcohol limit, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The 48-year-old, of Retford Road in Mattersey, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was handed a driving ban for three years and six months at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

He was also ordered to complete 40 hours of unpaid work within 12 months, fined £199 and told he must abstain from consuming alcohol for 80 days from his court appearance.

Nottinghamshire Police released the video footage to warn drivers of the dangers of drink-driving as it aims to curb the issue in rural areas - including Bassetlaw, Sherwood and Newark - during a summer campaign.

It said officers made 50 arrests related to drink-driving in rural areas in July and August 2024.

Out of these, 34% were involved in a road traffic collision, the force added.
