What is Flying Ant Day?

If you've been out and about this week, especially in southern parts of the UK you may have encountered swarms of flying ants.

Flying Ant Day, which typically falls in mid-July, when queens and males take flight to start new colonies, although it can take place over several days.

On Friday, the Met Office spotted a mile-long cloud of winged insects on radar, often mistaken for rain.

Although annoying, the ants are not dangerous and tend to emerge during warm, calm weather.

BBC reporter Erin Lister explains more.
