'It's that feeling of not being included'
Families have complained a revamped area at a popular country park is too difficult for wheelchair users to access.
A sensory area has been installed at Brocks Hill Country Park in Oadby, Leicestershire, which opened at the end of July.
Anna, eight, has Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome and Isabella, 13, has a condition called demyelinating sensory motor neuropathy which means they both use a wheelchair and have equally struggled to access the new facility.
The sensory area floor is covered with wood chippings which, according to Anna's mother, Louisa, make it difficult to navigate for wheelchair users.
She said: "There's a lovely sensory wheel at the back, but if you're using a wheelchair, you've got no way of accessing that, so she [Anna] just has to look on and see the other children playing, which breaks my heart - it's not fair."
Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, which runs the country park, admitted there had been "accessibility challenges", but hoped the play area would "meet the needs of a wide range of children".
