Driver caught trimming beard while on motorway

A motorway driver has been caught trimming his beard with no hands on the steering wheel in South Yorkshire.

The "shocking manscaping" was filmed by roads officers in an unmarked HGV, with the man among more than 240 people caught for driving offences over five days in July.

Other offences included 45 people using mobile phones while driving, 74 not wearing a seatbelt and one driver transporting uncaged livestock, South Yorkshire Police said.

The operation took place from 15 to 19 July on the M1, M18 and the A1.

The cab, provided by National Highways, meant officers could see inside HGVs and large vehicles as well as into cars, the force said.

Most of those stopped were HGV drivers, police said, followed by car drivers and those driving LGVs.

Roads policing inspector Matthew Collings said eight people had been killed on South Yorkshire's roads since the previous HGV cab operation in May.

“We are committed to doing all we can to reduce road deaths and casualties, but we can’t be everywhere - road users must take responsibility for their actions and safety," he said.

"You can’t be in control of other people’s actions, but you can your own."
