Winter solstice shining new light on Slieve Gullion history

Dozens of people will summit Slieve Gullion on Saturday to watch dawn break on the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Set at an altitude of more than 570m, the mountain is home to the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland.

What may, at first glance, appear to be a pile of loose rock actually transforms into a remarkable illumination when the sun hits during the winter solstice.

The solstice marks a key point in the astronomical calendar and signals the change from autumn to winter.
