How one man spent 10 years behind bars for stealing a mobile phone

Martin Tawton was jailed for a minimum of three-and-a-half years for stealing a mobile phone.

He was handed an imprisonment for public protection sentence - or IPP.

Unlike other sentences, IPPs have no fixed term, so prisoners have no idea when they will be freed.

The offender, from Cardiff, eventually served 10 years and has been recalled to jail three times.

IPP sentences are now scrapped.
