A major water main failure has sent a giant column of water high into the sky above Renfrewshire.

Passing drivers snapped some spectacular images of the geyser-like column of water beside the B786.

Scottish Water said a 30cm (12in) diameter pipe was damaged, affecting about 1,500 properties in Lochwinnoch, Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir.

One motorist said the plume appeared to be about 60ft (18m) high and was visible a mile away.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Water said: "Our teams are on site to repair a burst water main in Lochwinnoch which is causing interruption to normal water supplies for some customers.

"The damage was caused by a third party and has been located on a 12in mains pipe in a field in the Lochwinnoch area, affecting water supply to around 1,500 properties in Lochwinnoch, Kilmacolm, and Bridge of Weir areas."

She added that a tanker was on site to give some customers their supply back, and that traffic management had been set up in some locations to allow excavation work to repair the pipe.

Some customers may still have an interruption or change to supply while repairs are carried out, she said.
