A 22-year-old man has died following a two-car crash on the A760 near Largs in North Ayrshire.

Police were called to the scene on the road from Largs to Kilbirnie following reports of an accident involving a silver Honda Civic and a white Mercedes B class.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger, also a 22-year-old man, was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 63-year-old man, was taken to University Hospital Crosshouse for assessment. The road was closed for nine hours to allow police to carry out investigations.

The road reopened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police said inquiries into the incident were ongoing and asked anyone driving in the area around the time who may have dash cam footage prior to the crash to get in touch.

Sgt Brian Simpson, from the Ayrshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died at this difficult time."
