A "crude but viable device" has been found during a security alert in Bellaghy, County Londonderry.

A number of people were moved from their homes during the alert in the Beatrice Villas area. The alert has since ended.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said it attended following a report of a suspicious object shortly before 08:50 BST on Friday.

It said the device had been taken away for "further forensic examinations".

The PSNI has thanked residents, who have now returned to their homes, for their co-operation.
