Man died in vehicle fire at Whitby Abbey car park, inquest hears

Scott Andrew Wilson died near Whitby Abbey on 30 June, an inquest into his death has heard

A man died when the vehicle he was in caught fire at a car park near a North Yorkshire landmark, an inquest into his death has heard.

The body of Scott Andrew Wilson, 54, was found in the car park at Whitby Abbey on 30 June, North Yorkshire Coroners' Court was told.

Mr Wilson, a store assistant from Kirkbymoorside, died from burns due to an explosion, the court heard.

The inquest into his death was opened and adjourned on Thursday.

Earlier, the court heard that North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews had been called to the scene at about 18:10 BST following reports of a vehicle on fire.

Firefighters from Whitby, Scarborough and Malton attended, along with a fire investigator.

A man was taken out of the car and the incident was handed over to the police for investigation, a fire service spokesperson said.

The inquest into Mr Wilson's death is expected to continue at a date which is yet to be set.
