Residents in North Yorkshire said it had been "really stressful" to find their homes flooded just before Christmas due to Storm Darragh.

The storm caused disruption across Yorkshire as gusts of more than 50mph (80km/h) were recorded at Topcliffe, near Ripon, and Leeming on Saturday, with many roads affected.

North Yorkshire Council has been offering support to those affected, setting up a local assistance centre at the Moorside Room in Church Street in Kirkbymoorside.

Lisa Young, was at the centre on Monday trying to get supplies for her parents, both 68, who she said had been left "devastated" by flooding at their home in Kirby Mills.

She told the BBC: "The water started to rise in their home on Saturday and the sheer volume of it was just too much, so they've ended up with three and a half foot of water right through their bungalow, so everything has just been washed out basically.

"They've been tidying a few things up but we can't move anything until the insurers have been to assess everything.

"They are absolutely devastated, they've lost everything out of their entire home, oak flooring, furniture, beds, bathroom suite, kitchen, central heating, the whole lot."

Meanwhile, Tom and Jade, who did not share their surnames, said the first thing they saw when they tried to get to their home in Malton on Saturday was that "the whole street was flooded".

Tom said: "When we came home and opened the door all the water came flushing out and all our belongings were floating around everywhere, the dogs were swimming round the kitchen.

"It was really stressful to see it all before Christmas as well.

"Our son, who is only seven-years-old, has been very upset as he has lost all his toys."

Jade added she has been left "very upset, and I'd like a bit more help sorting it".

Denise Smith, who also lives in Kirby Mills, said she had spent the morning cleaning mud and silt from her backyard.

"All the flooring is ruined, however we still had our electricity so we were very fortunate in that sense," she said.

North Yorkshire Council said in a statement the assistance centre would be open every day this week between 09:00 and 17:00 GMT and was being staffed by people who could give a range of advice for those whose homes have been affected.

"For people affected by loss of power in the Kirkbymoorside area, 'winter warmer' packs are available from the Moorside Road support centre, and the packs include items such as a power bank, torches, blankets and hot water bottles," the statement added.
