A man whose dog attacked and injured another man and his dog after escaping from a back garden has been sentenced.

Thair Iqbal's mastiff-type dog bit the 39-year-old victim in Handsworth Road, Sheffield, on 19 September.

South Yorkshire Police said the man suffered injuries to his hand and upper body. His dog suffered minor injuries.

Iqbal, 54, of Handsworth Road was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work after he admitted allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control.

He was sentenced at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday. He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

South Yorkshire Police said following the incident officers had received a number of reports from residents concerned about the dog and the risk it posed.

The force said parents of children at nearby nursery had also expressed their fears at the animals proximity to the site.

Speaking after the hearing Ch Insp Emma Cheney said: "The reason the victim in this investigation was bitten was due to poor dog ownership.

"The owner had left his dog in the garden and left his property. His fencing was not high enough to contain the dog and he was unaware of its actions while loose.

"You are responsible for your dog's actions. If your dog causes fear or harm, you are the one going to court."

The dog was signed over to police following the attack and was later put down.
