Five people were detained by police following the incident in Sheffield on Wednesday

Extra police patrols are taking place in the Handsworth area of Sheffield after five children and an adult were injured in a suspected air rifle shooting.

Four boys, aged seven, 11, 13, and 15, a seven-year-old girl and a 62-year-old woman were hurt in the incident on Richmond Park Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

Three of the children required surgery to remove pellets, South Yorkshire Police said.

A spokesperson for the force said there would be an increased police presence in the area today and through the weekend.

'Stop and speak'

A 15-year-old girl, two boys aged 15 and 16 and two 18-year-old men were held on suspicion of possession of a firearm and causing grievous bodily harm, following the incident, which officers said took place at about 14:25 BST.

All were later released on bail.

Det Supt Nicola Leach said: "We know this incident has created some concerns in the community, which is why you will see more of our officers around the area in the next coming days."

She added: "At this time we believe this was an isolated incident, and we know that an air rifle was used and not a viable firearm."

Det Supt Leach said the force was working with local partners to address concerns raised by the local community.

She asked anyone with concerns to "stop and speak to our officers when you see them out and about".

"They are there to listen and help where they can," she said.
