Man dies in Sheffield crash after passing police car
A man has died in a crash moments after passing a police car in Sheffield.
The man was driving a black Mercedes along Retford Road at about 23:05 BST on Monday when it passed a police car going in the opposite direction.
As the police vehicle turned, the Mercedes hit two parked cars, South Yorkshire Police said. The driver, a man in his 40s, died at the scene.
The South Yorkshire force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
A police spokesperson said the Mercedes was "travelling at speed" when it struck the cars.
"A mandatory referral has been made to the force's Professional Standards Department and the Independent Office for Police Conduct," the force added.
A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said that before the crash, officers had been "involved in a short pursuit lasting approximately 13 seconds".
"IOPC investigators were sent to the scene and attended the police post-incident procedures."
The investigation was at an early stage, the spokesperson added.
