A huge fire has ripped through a commercial scrap metal yard near Clun in Shropshire.

Firefighters said large smoke plumes could be seen from several miles away as they travelled to the incident in Five Turnings at 20:53 BST on Monday.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue said up to 300 tonnes of scrap metal was thought to have caught fire but the cause of the blaze was yet to be established.

Crews are expected to remain at the scene until Wednesday.

At its height, eight Shropshire Fire and Rescue crews tackled the blaze with additional help provided by teams from neighbouring fire services.

Lee Baker, from the fire service, said crews faced hazards including "explosions and projectiles" while tackling the blaze.

He said water supplies due to the location also created further challenges.

Nearby residents were advised to shut their windows due to a large amount of smoke in the area.

No injuries have been reported, the fire service said, adding that Brick Kiln Farm Road was likely to remain closed.
