Leeds residents to use green bins to recycle glass in city first
Leeds residents will soon be able to use their green bins to recycle glass, the city council has announced.
A council spokesperson said the move could save about 2,600 tonnes of carbon per year.
The change is expected to come into effect in the summer, with more details to be announced shortly.
Councillor Mohammed Rafique, executive member for Climate, Energy, Environment and Green Space, said the move would have "big environmental benefits".
'Big demand'
Council leader James Lewis confirmed kerbside glass recycling collections would begin at a meeting on Wednesday.
"We know there is big demand from residents for more convenient glass recycling," he said.
It is estimated Leeds residents currently put 11,400 tonnes of glass in their black bins each year, the council spokesperson said.
Mr Rafique said the carbon savings would be "significant".
The service will come at no extra cost to residents, the council said.
