Brough and Willerby roundabout schemes delayed by rain

Two roundabout schemes have stalled due to "exceptionally wet weather".

An upgrade to the A164 Willerby roundabout and the creation of a roundabout in Brough will now be delayed by three and two months respectively, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

Recent heavy rainfall had made working conditions at the sites "extremely difficult", it said.

However, officials confirmed work would continue at both.

Councillor Gary McMaster, cabinet member for housing and infrastructure, said: "It's extremely unfortunate that we have to announce delays to both these roundabout schemes, but we are sorry to say the wet weather has had a huge impact to the condition of these sites.

"Our contractors have persevered, but these delays are now inevitable."

Work started on the £4.7m Brough scheme in July and was due to be completed by June, easing congestion.

The wet weather left an embankment "saturated", the council said, and the expected completion date has now been put back to September.

Meanwhile, engineers working on the £1.9m upgrade of the A164 / B1332 roundabout in Willerby were hampered by water running off nearby fields.

Workers also found buried drainage and service pipes, which were not on any underground plans, the council added.

Completion for that scheme has been pushed back to April - two months longer than initially expected.
