Mental health: Olympic boxer Luke Campbell urges people to talk

Olympic gold medal winner and former professional boxer Luke Campbell is to host a walking event to encourage people to talk about their mental health.

Two years after his last appearance in a ring, 36-year-old Mr Campbell is now opening up about the issues he has faced.

"After retiring, I thought the best thing I could do was rest my body. I'd had 22 years of working hard, never really had any time off and I'd hammered my body all the time.

"But what I didn't understand was the effect it would have on me mentally and my mental health.

"I think 95% of boxers that retire from the sport will go through mental struggles because it is such a solitary thing where you're on your own all the time."

On Saturday, Luke will be at Hessle Foreshore, East Yorkshire, to encourage others to take part in a bit of light exercise but, more importantly, talk about their worries.

"If there's anyone out there that is struggling don't be afraid to talk up and speak out. You're not alone."
