Mother 'broken' after seeing surgeon son shot dead on South Africa trip

The mother of a British surgeon killed in South Africa has criticised police and said she felt heartbroken over his death.

Kar Hao Teoh, an orthopaedic surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, Essex, was shot dead in front of his wife and two-year-old son as he was driving a car during a two week holiday.

His mother Ainah - who was also there - claimed it happened after they came across a road closure and police directed them towards a violent protest.

She said: "I thought it was obvious that we were in desperate need of help. What really broke my heart was that no empathy and care was shown to us in that moment. I'm so broken."

Ainah claims the officers just "walked away, and continued chatting amongst themselves".

Mr Teoh, 40, lived in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire.
