Watch: Dorset wheelchair basketball coach crowned Unsung Hero

A wheelchair basketball coach who set up a team to help other disabled adults has won the BBC South Unsung Hero award.

Terry Dennis was recognised for his work to create opportunities for disabled people to participate in sport in Dorset.

Since the 1990s he has volunteered in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and para-cycling, including setting up the Wessex Accessible Cycling Club.

Since the pandemic, he has returned to wheelchair basketball to create a new team, Dorset Demons, with the aim to give physically disabled adults who had been sheltering the chance to get back out socialising again.

He has helped gain more than £20,000 in funding to ensure team members have safe and good sports chairs to compete in.

The BBC Unsung Hero honour celebrates the best volunteers in sport, whose work is making a real difference in communities across the UK every day.

The overall winner will be announced at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show, which takes place on Tuesday, 19 December from 19:00 GMT on BBC One live from Salford.
