Sandiacre: Residents and dogs rescued from house fire

Two people have been rescued from a house in Derbyshire which was badly damaged by fire.

Firefighters said they were called to the "well-developed" blaze in Linden Grove, Sandiacre, at about 20:20 GMT on Tuesday.

Crews from Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Ascot Drive and Stapleford, along with an aerial ladder platform, attended.

A man and a woman were rescued from upstairs and treated by paramedics, with two dogs also being saved.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the pair were taken to hospital for "precautionary checks due to smoke inhalation".

An investigation concluded the cause of the fire was accidental and was due to an unattended electrical cooking appliance, the fire service added.

Station manager Barclay Masterson urged people to ensure they have a working smoke alarm on each floor of their property.

"On this occasion the property had one working smoke alarm which was positioned on the first floor," he said.

"Despite its presence, the fire was not detected by the smoke alarm, due to the distance from the fire.

"Luckily, one of the occupiers was able to smell the smoke from their bedroom.

"The smoke alarm did activate, but only after the 999 call was made."
