A council said it had increased parking charges in a city centre "to help with inflation".

On-street pay and display fees are due to rise by 20p in Cambridge city centre and permit charges will go up by £8.

Cambridgeshire County Council said it hoped the change would help "encourage everyone to make active travel choices".

Members of the highways and transport committee reviewed the fees at a meeting earlier this year.

The changes will affect all the council's on-street pay and display parking sites, including Shire Hall and Castle Court, and all resident, business and visitor permits provided by the council.

The parking charges are due increase on 12 March and the permits on 1 April.

'Active travel'

The Labour vice chairman of the highways and transport committee, Neil Shailer, said: "This decision has been made to stay in line with the costs of running our parking services and we haven't increased resident, business and visitor permit fees for two years.

"We hope that these small changes will also have a positive impact by encouraging people to shift to greener and more sustainable travel.

"That's why I'd continue to encourage everyone to make active travel choices or use other forms of transport including the park and ride services."
