Work starts on expanding 20mph zone in Ely

Work to expand a speed restriction zone across a city will begin on Monday, a council has said.

Cambridgeshire County Council last year approved a city-wide 20mph zone for Ely, which will be paid for by the Transforming Cities Fund.

The authority said in a tweet that work to expand the restricted zone was due to last four weeks.

The new speed limit - initially requested by the City of Ely Council - will be implemented by April.

"From Monday, we will begin work to expand the Ely 20mph zone to cover the whole of Ely," the council said in a tweet on X.

"We're expecting these works to take around four weeks.

"We won't need to close any roads, so disruption should be minimal."

The council said in December that a 20mph would be implemented across Ely to improve road safety and reduce pollution.

Councillors approved the expansion after a consultation.

More than 120 people had written in support of the reduced speed limit - with 65 writing to object to the plans.

"Studies have shown even a 1mph drop in speed reduces collisions by 6%," said Alex Beckett, the council's highways and transport committee chair.

"I'm pleased to hear 20mph will soon be rolled out in Ely and see the residents benefitting from cleaner air and safer travel, both of which are a priority for the council."
